Due to lack of sorting (which is important for me, for instance - all the MCU movies in chronological order, or all the DC TV shows integrated and in episode order to support proper viewing of cross overs - all done via smart playlist)

One key advantage of Home Sharing is it will share/play iTunes Store protected content, which no other media server can.ĮDIT: It occurs to me that Hap has mentioned he has the mother of all Home Sharing setups, and has experienced all manner of positives and negatives, perhaps he'll stop by and chime in about it as well. It's an expansive solution and understandably not everyone wants another project like that. Overall I find Plex much more versatile and stable, but setting up Plex takes time and planning. Fast, easy, uses what you already have without much fuss. So if that's all you need, it's genuinely not a bad solution, and I do use it this way from time to time.

When it doesn't work, there's no user-facing settings or feedback of any kind to troubleshoot.Plex, et al make it a key feature to set up your own private "Netflix," viewable from anywhere you have an internet connection. There's no (easy) way to access served media outside of your home network.
You can then go to the TV.app on your iPhone, iPad, or AppleTV, and stream that media from your Mac. You import your media into TV.app on your host Mac, turn on media sharing, and done. As someone pondering a Home Sharing setup, could you expand on this?
